In line with its strategy of educating and upskilling its members to be capable of succeeding in a competitive business environment, Sharjah Girl Guides (SGG) launched a series of 10 niche workshops in September to introduce them to the world of event management. The workshops which conclude on November 16, are aimed at imparting the necessary skills to guides (12-15 years) and senior guides (15-18 years) to organize and manage events, in addition to the basics of marketing and communication.
The workshops, organized by Events Management Club at SGG, will teach the SGG members how to use practical methodologies in events management, through interactive and creative tools.
Commenting on the workshops, Shaikha Al Shamsi, SGG Manager, said: “SGG is committed to advancing the skillsets and knowledge of its members in event management. This sector is a vital support component of the tourism industry and a major contributor to the UAE’s economy. Additionally, the event management industry contributes to the growth of other sectors, including the hospitality industry.”
She added: “We want to upskill our girls to be able to take advantage of the opportunities in this sector and contribute to its growth over the coming years, especially since this industry is a major contributor in the UAE’s post-oil economy. Apart from creating job opportunities for the new generations, this sector will also be fertile ground to establish SMEs, which will have a major positive impact on the economy.”
Academic as well as practical workshops
Al Shamsi added: “The workshop agenda includes teaching members how to manage participating artists and entertainment activities. Girl guides will also learn effective marketing through social media platforms, budgeting, and financial forecast.”
Further, the workshops will teach participants the basics of negotiation with suppliers and event implementation teams and help develop mechanisms for event management through brainstorming sessions.
SGG members who complete the workshops will be awarded a certificate of participation by the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA).
5 creative clubs
In line with its 2019 strategy, SGG has launched five creative clubs (Cooking Club, Sports Club, Media Club, Escapade Club, and Events Club) to add to the education and accomplishments of its members, taking into consideration their age group and specific needs.
