Sharjah Girl Guides (SGG) will hold its winter camp themed ‘Under the Moonlight’, in a virtual format from December 22 – 29 this year. The online event will feature a series of interactive workshops and innovative programmes specially designed to hone the talents and leadership skills of its members.
By hosting the winter camp, the SGG seeks to instill valuable life skills in the young guides to enhance confidence in their abilities, in addition to aware the guides on the traditions and the guiding movement.
Virtual workshops
The Brownies (7-11 years) will be trained in the essentials of gardening through ‘The Little Gardener’ workshop and will also learn of its significant role in the protection of the environment. In order to highlight the skills of the advanced guides and prepare them to serve the community, Senior guide Hamda Al Marzooqi will lead the young girls in a homemade pizza making workshop titled ‘With Chef Hamda’ where they will learn the intricacies of kneading and working the dough, preparing the sauce and cheese toppings, and baking it to perfection.
The girls will be taught the fundamentals of water colouring and explore crafts such as knitting and embroidery in a series of workshops conducted by artist Bdour Abdel Qader. The ‘Handmade Bag’ workshop will educate participants on the benefits of eco-friendly colours over toxic, chemical paints, and instruct them in the art of creating handmade bags that can be used in camping.
The virtual camp will also offer an opportunity to watch the film, Scouting around the World, which is an introduction to the scouting movement and features interviews with guides from Bahrain.
Virtual camping
Under the ‘Virtual Camping’ programme, Brownies (7-11 years) and Guides (12-15 years) will enjoy a remote camping experience in the ‘Home Camping’ workshop. They will learn how to set up a tent using sheets, blankets, and electric candles and learn how to prepare snacks, popcorn and a hot drink.
Discussions and influencers
A range of topics will be addressed over the duration of the camp under the ‘Discussions and Influencers’ programme, which will also emphasise the ideal qualities of a girl guide. Several brownies and guides will narrate their experiences and discuss the skills they acquired through their participation in SGG’s programmes and events.
Interactive sessions
Guides and senior guides will also participate in three interactive sessions – ‘The Art of Storytelling’, ‘Emotional Intelligence’ and ‘Be a Pioneer’, all led by Ali Al Salloum.
