Sharjah Girl Guides Enter Spirit of Giving For Hag Al Lailah Celebrations

Sharjah Girl Guides (SGG) helped many of their neighbors celebrate Hag Al Lailah by providing them with their own colorful hand-decorated bags full of sweets and treats.

Hag Al Lailah, a well-loved Emirati occasion, is celebrated every year to mark the onset of the Holy Month of Ramadan and is traditionally marked by youngsters greeting their neighbours in return for little luxuries of candy and confectionary.

In collaboration with the Districts and Villages Affairs Department and Sharjah Police, SGG held a workshop to design the multi-coloured bags at Mughaider Majlis – which they then filled with sweets to distribute to families, showing their commitment to giving back to the community and respect for their Emirati roots.

Thirty brownies, aged 7-11 years and 20 guides aged 12-15 years, visited a number of houses in the Al Refaa Area in Sharjah to distribute the gifts and also raise awareness of the SGG movement.

Shaikha Al Shamsi, Manager of SGG, said: “Hag Al Lailah is a dearly held tradition for Emiratis and rather than young children receiving the sweets on this occasion, our guides and brownies distributed the sweets and bags to families themselves in a gesture of community service and goodwill, a perfect example of the SGG vision to build a generation of girls and young women with values of loyalty, love for their nation, and a sense of responsibility and generosity.”
