A spring camp was organised by the Sharjah Girl Guides (SGG) for two weeks to impart important life skills to the Guides and Brownies, instill confidence in them and get them set for a smooth transition to adulthood.
Taking place over the first two weeks of April, the programme for the Guides and Brownies featured art and craft classes, team building exercises, cookery sessions, sailing lessons, motivational talks, make-up classes and training in social skills.
The idea was to develop the overall personality of the participating children and imbue them with skills that would stand them in good stead later in life.
The first session, conducted by Alz Beauty Training Centre, introduced senior Girl Guides to the process of creating special effects makeup including prosthetic sculpting, molding and casting techniques to create advanced cosmetic effects.
A five-day space and science session was organised for Brownies by Science Made Fun and Emirates Marine Environmental Group (EMEG) to enhance their knowledge of science through hands-on experience. They learnt about the UAE’s marine life and ecosystem in collaboration with EMEG, explored marine reserves, learnt about environment protection and sustainability, and even cleaned beaches.
The Brownies also indulged in the culinary arts over a five-day course, learning to prepare different dishes and appetizers from a different cuisine daily. Apart from imbibing food preparation skills, they also learnt about the cultures the cuisines originated from. Little Chef badges were presented to Brownies who completed the course.
Art and craft workshops were organised for Guides over the two-week period, schooling them in watercolour painting, calligraphy, stamp-making, flower and candle-making. The workshops were led by artist Hosanna Lee Su Yee and Volet Goods Wholesalers LLC.
Meanwhile, Brownies participated in a team building workshop led by Mawhiba Training and Positive Motivation. They were taught leadership skills through practical exercises designed to develop their management capabilities and build a strong personality.
Apart from this, 15 senior Guides were selected to learn modern sailing techniques from professionals at the Al Hamriya Sports and Cultural Club. The aim was to encourage women’s participation in a sport which not only makes them physically fit but also brings out leadership qualities in them.
“The spring camp was organised for Guides as well as Brownies to learn new skills that would contribute to their overall personal development and serve as a guide for their future path in life,” said Shaikha Al Shamsi, manager of SGG. “The camp was informed by the objective for which the Sharjah Girl Guides was established – to up-skill children and young women in Sharjah and guide them in their own endeavors and help them contribute meaningfully to their communities.”
